WWW (W3) refers to the World Wide Web or simply called the web. It is a system of interlinked hypertext documents consisting of formatted text, images, sound or other objects. Very often people mistook WWW as the internet itself but WWW is only an application on the internet and computer network .WWW consists of public websites connected to the internet including client devices such as cell phones and computers. World Wide Web was developed to be a resource for human knowledge. (Berners-Lee, 1991)
Timothy Berners-Lee developed WWW in a period between late 1980 and early 1990. When he returned to CERN in 1984 he recognized that the dispersed physicists around the world need a platform to share data. So he wrote a proposal for a large hypertext link but it generated a little interest. He called it names information mesh, the information mine (TIM), mine of information (MOI) but all were having some issues so were turned down. He finally named it as World Wide Web. Then he found his collaborator Robert Cailliau who rewrote the proposal and published it on 12 November 1990 but found no vendor and later it was adapted by some scientific departments of universities and physics laboratories. In 1992 graphics and animation were added. In 1993 CERN agreed web protocol and code can be used by everyone for free. In 1996 WWW proved to be a big platform for e-commerce. And after that its use increased really fast and boomed the internet. (Berners-Lee, 1991)
WWW is so organized that most of the websites use WWW. WWW allows us to use the internet to the fullest. It has been a revolutionary idea in the history of the internet. It allows texts, images, graphics, sounds and other applications can also be added by using java etc . You can be navigated from one page to another page easily .The Web thus played an important role for making the internet popular. It has been like a door to the internet. (Mitchell)
World Wide Web has always been of great use for engineering students. A good engineer needs to gain quality knowledge and needs to be aware of the latest developments and research in his field, and the web proves to be an ultimate source. WWW serves to be an all time guide to him unlike his professors. He can scratch the web hard until he gets the desired information. Web has created a sort of competition among the engineers. Most of the time they try a new approach to the old or failed models and obviously they retrieve the information about them from the web .The Web has made an engineer worldwide. (Engineering, Jacobs School of , 2010)
Timothy Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau had never thought that the thing that they were making would be so popular and useful to mankind. WWW has made the internet usable;
it is just like a broadway towards an ocean of knowledge. It not only serves for study purposes but it also entertains you ,and allows you to be in touch with others, thus socializing us. It is like a never ending resource or rather I would say it is a miracle.
